Stabilised Mussel Powder
A family owned business, we have been involved with the green lipped (greenshell) mussel
industry for over a quarter of a century, and were one of the pioneers in developing green
lipped mussel powder as an anti-inflammatory product.
However, early results for mussel powder were inconsistent. It was discovered that
the application of heat to mussels in the manufacturing process would severely reduce
the activity of the powder. To this day, most of the mussel powders available from
other companies are manufactured using steam opened mussels, and although this is a cheap
way to manufacture powder, the powder itself is inferior. Maclab uses fresh, high quality
green lipped mussels and no heat is applied during the manufacturing process, ensuring
that its customers receive a premium quality product with strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Unfortunately the basic mussel powder was extremely unstable meaning it degraded
rapidly and its anti-inflammatory benefits were compromised.
Further research led Maclab to joining forces with RMIT University in Melbourne,
and Japan's leading natural product scientist, Professor Kosuge from
Shizuoka University, Japan. As a result of this collaboration, Maclab developed and
patented a unique method for stabilisation of the mussel powder, ensuring its efficacy.
No other suppliers of mussel powder in New Zealand use the
stabilisation process developed by Maclab. We are the sole manufacturer of a unique
stabilised mussel powder which published research has shown to be the best mussel powder
available on the market.

The company has just patented a new mussel identification process which screens
mussels for anti-inflammatory activity prior to harvesting, ensuring our customers
receive the best possible powder. No other powder producer has this technology.
